Each year, HSWA performs annual hydrant flushing.  System maintenance is essential to ensure our water system continues to operate at its best.  Flushing is performed by opening targeted hydrants.  Flushing occurs annually, typically when fall is near.  Flushing occurs during the hours of 8am and 4pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays.

Importance of Flushing:

  • Assurance that water can flow effectively through our distribution system
  • Ensure adequate flows are available in the event of a fire
  • Reduce sediment build up (sediment occurs naturally and is harmless)

Flushing side effects:

  • Discolored, cloudy or bubbly water- this is expected, however is not harmful
  • Discolored water can be cleared by running the water from the lowest fixture, allowing it to run clear- this generally takes a few minutes
  • Lower water pressure

Avoid the following when crews are noticeable in your area:

  • When possible refrain from using the water
  • Check for discolored water prior to using appliances
  • Abstain from doing laundry

If discolored water persists outside of targeted work hours please call the office at 215-672-8011
